Fridges contain regulated refrigerant gases and cannot legally go in a skip. They must be degassed by a licensed handler, which is why they carry a separate fee.

Why a fridge costs more to dispose of than a washing machine
The gases are the answer. Refrigerants and the blowing agents in the insulation foam are environmentally damaging if released, so the law requires them to be extracted at a licensed facility before the unit is recycled. That controlled step costs money, and every legitimate price for fridge disposal has it inside.
It is also why fridges are a favourite of fly-tippers, and why a dumped fridge is treated seriously when traced. The protection, as ever, is the two-minute check: a registered carrier, a receipt, and a named destination.
One practical note: if a new appliance is on its way, the retailer may offer collection of the old one at delivery, sometimes for a fee. When that works out cheaper, take it; when the timing or the price does not suit, this is the route that collects on your schedule instead of theirs.
