Loft work is slow: everything comes down a ladder by hand. Firms price it by the hour rather than by volume, and it is usually cheaper bundled with the rest of the house.
Every firm is checked against the Environment Agency register, insured to at least £2m, and asked for references we actually call. Your job goes to a maximum of three of them.

How a loft clearance runs
A few hours for a boarded loft with a good hatch. Longer for the other kind.
- 1The access decides the plan
Hatch size, ladder or no ladder, boarded or joists. A crew can work with any of it, but each step down from "boarded with a fixed ladder" adds time, and time is the price.
- 2Everything comes down for sorting
Lofts are where documents, photographs and forgotten valuables live. Sorting happens in daylight, on a landing or in a spare room, not crouched under a roof beam.

The crew stages it, you decide in passes. Most people keep a box or two and are surprised how easy the rest is to release once it is actually in front of them.

Dust sheets on the landing from the start, a hoover over it at the end, waste gone the same day.
What a good firm does in a loft
Small space, easy to do badly.
Everything from the loft crosses the landing, the stairs and the hall. Sheets down first, and the carpet looks the same at the end as the start.
Boxes of paper get opened, not assumed. Certificates, photographs and the first teddy have all been found in loft boxes labelled as something else.
Clearing stored items is normal work. Removing old insulation is a different job with different kit, quoted separately if you want it.
Lofts have pipes, tanks and cables exactly where boxes get dragged. Crews that do lofts weekly move around them without being reminded.
An unboarded loft means working joist to joist, slowly. A firm that quotes it sight unseen at the boarded price will find the difference somewhere.
