Sofa removal

Sofa removal in London & the South East

A sofa is the classic awkward item: too big for the car, too heavy for one person, and priced by councils in weeks rather than days. A two-person crew takes it from the room it sits in, usually within a day or two.

Sofa removal across London and the South East

Since 2023, upholstered seating must be incinerated rather than landfilled under POPs regulations. That is why a sofa costs more to remove than its size suggests.

Every firm is checked against the Environment Agency register, insured to at least £2m, and asked for references we actually call. Your job goes to a maximum of three of them.

What a sofa removal includes

  • All labour and the vehicle
  • Licensed disposal, with a waste transfer note for your records
  • Dismantling furniture where it will not fit through the door
  • Sweeping through afterwards, left broom-clean
  • Resale value on good furniture offset against your price
  • Donation to charity of anything usable, receipts on request

Estimate this job

How sofa removal works

Minutes on site. The value is in the lifting and the routing.

  1. 1
Send a photo and the postcode

A photo answers the questions that matter: size, whether it splits, what the access looks like. Firm price from that, usually same day.

  2. 2
Two people collect it from the room

Not the kerb. Doors popped off hinges where needed, corners padded, stairs handled. That is the difference you are paying for over a council collection.

  3. 3
    Reuse first, honestly

A sofa in good condition with its fire labels intact can be donated or resold. Without labels, charities legally cannot take it, and it goes for recycling instead.

  4. 4
    Recycled, not fly-tipped

Frames, foam and metal are separated at a licensed facility. You get told which route it took, and the carrier is registered, which is what keeps a dumped sofa from being traced to your door.

What a good firm does with a sofa

Small job, but there is still a right way.

They take it from inside

The whole point. No dragging it to the kerb the night before, no mattress-in-the-front-garden week.

They check the fire labels before promising donation

Charities can only resell upholstered furniture with its fire safety labels attached. A firm that checks first gives you an honest answer instead of a warm story.

They quote the pair sensibly

The van is coming anyway: the second sofa, the armchair or the mattress usually adds little. Say everything that might go.

They dismantle when the door says so

Feet off, back off, or fully split. Better than your door frame learning the hard way.

They are registered waste carriers

Even for one sofa. Dumped furniture gets traced, and the CBDU check takes two minutes.

Worth knowing

Why the charity said no

The most common sofa surprise: a decent, clean sofa that a charity refuses. The reason is almost always the fire safety label, the permanent tag sewn under the cushions or on the base. UK charities can only resell upholstered furniture that still carries it, so a sofa that lost its labels years ago is legally unsaleable however good it looks.

If the labels are there and the sofa is sound, say so when you book: reuse routes exist and a good firm uses them. If not, recycling is the honest destination, and the separated frame, foam and metal do genuinely get recovered rather than landfilled.

Three steps, no chasing

  1. 1 Tell us about the property

Postcode, rough size, how full it is and anything awkward about the access. Ninety seconds, and photos help but are not required.

  2. 2 Up to three firms quote

Only firms that cover London & the South East and hold a current licence see it. Fixed prices in writing, usually inside a day.

  3. 3 Pick one and book

Message them through us, agree a date, and pay the firm directly at the price they quoted. ClearSorted costs you nothing.

Common questions

Can it be collected quickly?
Usually within a day or two, and often same-day if a van is in the area. It is exactly the kind of job firms slot between larger ones.
Is it cheaper to wait for the council collection?
Often the council is cheaper in cash and dearer in everything else: booked weeks out, kerbside only, and you do the carrying. The firm price buys the lifting, the speed and the door-to-van handling.
Will they take the armchair too?
Yes, and it is the cheapest add-on you will ever book, because the van and the crew are already there. Mention everything that might go when you ask.
How much does sofa removal cost in London?
Most sofa removal jobs in London fall between £70 and £120, depending on volume, access and what is left in the property. You will get fixed quotes from up to three vetted firms, free.
